As a writer and editor, I’m fascinated by the hundreds of judgment calls that go into effective writing: decisions about voice, viewpoint, imagery, order, pacing, and many more. The sometimes dramatic changes from one draft to the next as I get closer to discovering and shaping what I want to say.

As an editor, I want your writing to command your readers’ full attention—to project your ideas, promote your research, strengthen your advocacy, and give voice to your passion.

You may be writing a short article or a 300-page dissertation. I can help you clarify your thoughts and organize your material in a compelling and readable way.

I do fine-grain editing too, usually toward the end of a project. Then, my goal is to cut redundancy, improve flow, help to sharpen your analysis, or find fresh ways to make a point so that your writing sparkles.

Given the dominance of English globally, I like working with people for whom English is a second language. I’ve edited scholarly papers, grant proposals, reports for non-profits, and book-length manuscripts so that they are grammatically correct and in idiomatic English. I want you to be confident that colleagues, funders, policy-makers, or potential publishers will easily recognize your knowledge and abilities, the validity and authority of your work.

personal & professional coaching

Coaching can be highly effective in making changes in one’s life; completing a major project like a dissertation; or tackling something stuck on the “back burner”.

I took the Coaches Training Institute basic curriculum some years ago and strongly believe in this upbeat, future-oriented approach. It assumes that we are all resourceful, creative, and whole. The focus is on your agenda, integrity, and values, and you make the change.

As your coach, my job is to encourage you, help you articulate your ideas and needs, and push you at times. It’s the dynamic between us that sparks curiosity, learning, clarity, and action. Mostly, I’ll ask questions. Some are practical and immediate—What can you do about this next week? What’s standing in your way? Others draw on fundamental beliefs:

• What are your core values?
• What does success look like to you?
• What is your inner voice telling you?
• What “stories” are you telling yourself about your life?
• What aspects of yourself do you want to step into?
• Who will you need to become to create the future you want?

A coaching session—which is confidential unless you say otherwise—is not a conversation. I may interrupt to redirect your thoughts; request that you commit to certain actions (you can accept, refuse, or make a “counter-offer”); or challenge you to “up your game”. My goal is always to help you create the life you want to live.

Our sessions may be by phone or Skype, to fit your schedule and needs e.g. 30 minutes a week, an hour twice a month, or a day-long intensive (for dissertation coaching) where we meet in person.
